Smaller Footprint

20ft Standard Container

The 20ft is the smaller of the two standard sizes. Inside, it measures about 19 ft 4 in long, 7 ft 9 in wide and 7 ft 10 in high, and it can be placed in spots a 40ft cannot reach.

It suits a renovation, seasonal equipment, or a business that has outgrown its back room. It needs 110 feet of straight clearance at the drop point.

Common Uses

  • ✓ A Chicago renovation can use a compact box to keep cabinets and flooring near the work, provided the address has an approved placement and a workable delivery approach. Draw the path from the truck to the pad before choosing the door end.
  • ✓ A Peoria contractor can separate power tools, ladders and consumables from equipment moving through a yard. Shelves and an aisle make the space easier to use than a floor packed with stacked cartons.
  • ✓ A Rockford workshop can keep bulky fixtures, packaging and seasonal supplies outside the production area. Check whether the items need dry storage alone or a controlled interior environment.
  • ✓ Central Illinois farm properties can use a nearby lockable store for irrigation fittings, hand tools and repair parts. Locate it where delivery and service access remain usable after rain, away from field drainage routes.
  • ✓ Grounds crews around Joliet and Bloomington can rotate summer tools and winter equipment without filling the active work bay. Clean and dry stored equipment first, then allow room for inspection.
  • ✓ Southern Illinois property projects may have plenty of land but a short gate approach. A smaller container can reduce the storage footprint, although the truck still needs its own clear unloading route.

Double the Space

40ft Standard Container

Twice the storage of a 20ft in the same width. The 40ft standard suits contractors, farms and businesses with large equipment or many pallets.

The trade is access. A 40ft needs 130 feet of straight clearance for the tilt-bed to set it down. On a constrained lot, two 20ft units may fit where one 40ft will not.

Common Uses

  • ✓ A warehouse serving the Chicago freight market can use a separate storage box for packaging and reusable handling materials. Keep it outside active turning paths and plan how workers will reach the far end safely.
  • ✓ A Rockford manufacturing shop can hold fixtures, non-sensitive components and spare workholding equipment between jobs. Confirm floor-loading needs for concentrated machinery before treating the box as an extension of the shop.
  • ✓ Peoria area construction projects can stage longer material and bulk supplies close to the work. Mark the truck approach early, before the site fills with excavation piles and other deliveries.
  • ✓ An agricultural operation around Decatur or Champaign can separate repair inventory from a busy equipment shed. Check door access with the farm vehicles that will actually load it, not just an empty footpath.
  • ✓ A business in western Illinois can consolidate seasonal displays and durable stock into one long storage aisle. Use a written inventory and keep heavier frequently used items near the door.
  • ✓ Southern Illinois maintenance yards can organize fencing, outdoor equipment and spare parts in a weather-sheltered space. Review runoff, ground bearing and the removal route as carefully as the initial delivery.

Most Space

40ft High Cube Container

Same footprint as the standard 40ft, one foot taller: 9 ft 6 in outside and about 8 ft 10 in inside. That foot can help with tall equipment and overhead services, while insulation and a finished floor reduce the available headroom.

The extra foot suits conversions such as offices, bunkhouses, break rooms and workshops. It needs the same clearance as any 40ft: 130 feet of straight run.

Common Uses

  • ✓ A Rockford shop with tall but lightweight stock can use additional vertical room for organized storage. Check the load rating and stability of shelving separately from the container dimensions.
  • ✓ A proposed Chicago area workspace can benefit from planning ceiling services before selecting a shell. Insulation, wiring and finishes all reduce the usable room, and the conversion still needs a complete design.
  • ✓ A Peoria supplier storing bulky packaging can gain vertical space without adding another ground footprint. Keep a safe retrieval method in the plan instead of stacking beyond practical reach.
  • ✓ A Central Illinois farm can compare the actual height of stored equipment with the door opening. The outside height of the container does not tell you what clears its doors.
  • ✓ A Southern Illinois studio concept can start with a measured layout showing the workbench, openings and mechanical equipment. Select the container after the finished room and site access have been checked.

Modified Containers

A modified container starts as a standard steel box and gains the parts you need: doors, windows, insulation, electrical, climate control. The result is a weatherproof structure that can be placed wherever the delivery truck can reach.

Which modifications matter depends on where it will sit. Insulation and ventilation are decided by climate, not preference, so tell us the site and the intended use before the specification is fixed.

Common Uses

  • ✓ A Chicago contractor planning a site office can start with staffing, desk layout, door location and the route from the work area. A window and a personnel door alone do not define a finished occupied space.
  • ✓ A Rockford maintenance team can specify a secure tool room around the actual bench and cabinet dimensions. Separate the storage layout from any electrical or temperature-control work.
  • ✓ A Peoria project manager can map the placement early enough to preserve unloading access during construction. Temporary use still deserves a clear scope for removal and restoration of the site.
  • ✓ A Central Illinois agricultural workshop can place frequently used repair parts close to the work without sending every task back to the main building. Define lighting, ventilation and power needs before discussing finishes.
  • ✓ A Southern Illinois property owner can compare a simple storage shell with a finished workroom. The delivery quote, interior work and site connections should be visible as separate decisions.

Refrigerated

Refrigerated (Reefer) Containers

A reefer is a shipping container with a refrigeration unit built into one end, holding anywhere from -25 degrees F to +70 degrees F. The insulation is part of the original build, not added afterwards, which is why it holds temperature the way a retrofitted box cannot.

Available in 20ft and 40ft. It needs a 460V 3-phase connection, or a compatible generator where 3-phase power is not on site. Confirm your power supply before ordering.

Common Uses

  • ✓ A Chicago catering operation can assess short-term cold storage against the loading schedule and the time doors will stand open. Explain whether products arrive chilled or need to be cooled after loading.
  • ✓ A Peoria food business can compare overflow storage with changes to its existing cold room. Confirm a practical route for staff, carts and deliveries between the two spaces.
  • ✓ A Rockford distributor can specify the actual packaging, pallet pattern and product temperature. Leave room for airflow and follow the selected equipment instructions for loading.
  • ✓ An Illinois produce operation can keep harvested crops at a set temperature until they are sold or shipped. Choose the unit size based on how much crop it must hold at one time.

Before You Order

Site Preparation and Delivery Clearance

Containers arrive on a tilt-bed truck. Knowing your clearance before the truck is booked is what keeps a delivery from turning into a second trip.

Required Straight Clearance

20ft
110 feet straight clearance
Measured from the drop point in a straight line
40ft
130 feet straight clearance
Standard and high cube both

Also check: at least 10 ft of width, at least 15 ft of driving height and at least 22 ft of height along the entire unloading path, plus the road surface. Gravel and dirt may be workable, but flag steep grades and soft ground before booking.
