40ft Container Dimensions & Details

The 40ft standard container offers roughly 2,350 cubic feet of interior space, twice that of the 20ft conex box, in the same 8-foot width. It is the workhorse container for construction companies, agricultural operations, and any business that moves or stores significant volumes of material. Weighing up whether to rent or buy this size? See our rent vs buy guide.

A 40ft needs a longer approach for delivery than a 20ft. Available in several grades, including used wind and water tight (WWT) and one-trip. Our container condition guide has the full grade breakdown.

Use Cases

Ways to Use a 40ft Container in Illinois

A warehouse serving the Chicago freight market can use a separate storage box for packaging and reusable handling materials. Keep it outside active turning paths and plan how workers will reach the far end safely.

A Rockford manufacturing shop can hold fixtures, non-sensitive components and spare workholding equipment between jobs. Confirm floor-loading needs for concentrated machinery before treating the box as an extension of the shop.

Peoria area construction projects can stage longer material and bulk supplies close to the work. Mark the truck approach early, before the site fills with excavation piles and other deliveries.

An agricultural operation around Decatur or Champaign can separate repair inventory from a busy equipment shed. Check door access with the farm vehicles that will actually load it, not just an empty footpath.

A business in western Illinois can consolidate seasonal displays and durable stock into one long storage aisle. Use a written inventory and keep heavier frequently used items near the door.

Southern Illinois maintenance yards can organize fencing, outdoor equipment and spare parts in a weather-sheltered space. Review runoff, ground bearing and the removal route as carefully as the initial delivery.

Delivering 40ft Containers Across Illinois

Site Requirements for 40ft Delivery

A 40ft container needs more room to deliver than a 20ft. The truck with a loaded tilt-bed trailer runs about 80 feet long. Here is what you need:

  • Approach length: 130 feet of clear, firm surface ahead of where the container will sit.
  • Width clearance: At least 10 feet throughout the delivery path.
  • Overhead clearance: At least 15 feet of height for the truck to drive in and 22 feet of height along the entire unloading path.
  • Firm ground: The landing area needs to carry the container's weight, roughly 8,000 lbs empty. Concrete, compacted gravel, and hard-packed dirt all work well.

FAQ

40ft Container Questions

A 40ft container needs 130 feet of straight, level run measured back from where it will sit, at least 15 feet of height for the truck to drive in and 22 feet of height along the entire unloading path, and at least 10 feet of width. Where a site cannot give a 40ft that run, two 20ft containers, which need 110 feet each, may fit.
Wind and Water Tight units start at $2,258 delivered in Chicago. What you pay depends on the grade you choose, on what is in stock when you order and on the access at your site.
